Veterinary Assistant (Oncology Department)

Red River Animal Emergency Hospital and Referral Center is North Dakota’s only 24/7 emergency hospital and referral center, and we have been providing exceptional care to our veterinary community since 2005! At RRAEH we are able to provide specialty veterinary services in Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Oncology and are currently seeking a veterinary assistant to join our Oncology team; previous experience in veterinary medicine is preferred.

As a RRAEH Oncology assistant, you are supporting our veterinarians, technicians, and CSRs in all hospital duties and ensuring a comfortable and sanitary environment for all of our patients. Rather than the hustle and bustle of our ER, our Oncology service strives to maintain a calm, therapeutic environment for the patients receiving treatment and care.

We are looking for someone who not only cares about our patients and their owners but our hospital as a whole. We look to create lasting bonds with patients and owners while providing them with advanced care and compassion.

Pay: Starting up to $17 per hour. (More with veterinary experience)

Schedule: Tuesday – Thursday, 12-hour shifts (No weekends or Holidays, days of the week may be shifted during holiday weeks and as needed by the service to include Mondays and Fridays)

(Opportunity to train and pick up ER shifts, but the Oncology Service will be the main priority)

As an Oncology Veterinary Assistant, you will:

  • Reviewing patient history and current health status to identify any pre-existing concerns.
  • Gently restraining or handling patients during pre-treatment evaluations.
  • Preparing comfortable bedding and ensuring a quiet space for stressed patients.
  • Assisting with the handling and restraint of patients for diagnostic procedures and treatments.
  • Monitoring patients for signs of distress or adverse reactions during and after treatments.
  • Maintaining a calm and comforting environment for oncology patients, many of whom may be stressed or anxious.
  • Preparing and administering prescribed medications under veterinary supervision, including chemotherapy agents if appropriately trained.
  • Assisting veterinarians during procedures such as biopsies, ultrasounds, or other diagnostics.
  • Educating pet owners on treatment plans, medication administration, and aftercare.
  • Providing emotional support to clients during challenging times.
  • Scheduling follow-up appointments and coordinating patient care.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records, including treatment logs and progress notes.
  • Assembling client education handouts and folders for chemotherapy patients.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety protocols for handling hazardous materials, such as chemotherapy drugs.
  • Assisting with drawing blood, collecting samples, and preparing them for laboratory analysis.
  • Performing basic diagnostic tests, such as cytology preparation.
  • Operating and maintaining diagnostic equipment used in oncology (e.g., imaging devices).
  • Communicating effectively with the oncology team to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Participating in training and continuing education to stay updated on oncology procedures and advancements.
  • Collaborating with other departments within the practice, such as surgery or internal medicine, for integrated care.
  • Preparing chemotherapy agents under veterinary supervision while adhering to strict safety guidelines.
  • Monitoring and managing the side effects of chemotherapy in patients.
  • Assisting in palliative care for terminal patients, focusing on comfort and quality of life.
  • Cleaning treatment tables, counters, and equipment with veterinary-grade disinfectants before and after each patient.
  • Performing scheduled deep cleaning of treatment rooms, including walls, floors, and air vents, to remove accumulated dirt and debris.
  • Ensuring proper cleaning of high-risk areas such as chemotherapy administration stations.
  • Ensuring proper use of gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection when handling patients or hazardous materials.
  • Safely handling and disposing of biological waste, including used sharps and chemotherapy materials, in designated containers.
