RRAEH & RECOVER

CPR Training

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving emergency procedure that combines rescue breathing & chest compressions to help in a case scenario if breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

Red River Emergency Animal Hospital & Referral Center is now offering Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Life Support (ALS) CPR courses for veterinary professionals only. This includes a 2-Step process involving online & in-person training.

In-person workshops offer immersive CPR scenarios with a high-fidelity simulator to help rescuers connect didactic knowledge with hands-on skills.

The Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) Initiative was spearheaded by a team of veterinary emergency and critical care specialists in 2010 with the goal of developing and disseminating the first evidence-based veterinary cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) guidelines.

RECOVER is the only official veterinary CPR certification recognized by the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (ACVECC) and the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society (VECCS), and is a non-profit program.

The workshop is 6 RACE credits and there is an online prerequisite that must be completed before participation in the workshop. Certification signifies one’s knowledge and skills are up-to-date with current evidence-based guidelines.

FIRST STEP:

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

  • Basic Life Support is the first peer-reviewed small animal CPR course that teaches the essential concepts needed to maximize outcomes in patients with cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • Analyze different scenarios and patient examples on how body size and shape dictate where to perform compressions.
  • Teams & Groups will practice strengthening their communication and teamwork through a systematic approach to CPR while performing high-quality chest compressions and proper ventilation.

SECOND STEP:

ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT

  • Interactive software allows for real-time monitoring & display of ECG, ETCO2, SpO2, & BP on a large screen visible to all participants while utilizing a canine simulator that will breathe, have audible lung & heart sounds, & palpable pulses when ‘alive.’
  • This training will provide hands-on experience in team & group dynamics & closed-loop communication for practice scenarios, an important tool to prevent errors that can lead to serious consequences.
  • We will run 4 full practice codes, from initial assessment through cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) to return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), & we’ll have a structured debriefing after each code.

How many classroom RECOVER sessions are needed? How long are they?

  • Most participants will require one session of classroom training. After one session, participants will take a completion test, up to two times.
    • Additional sessions (at additional cost) will be needed if a participant does not pass the completion test after two attempts.
  • One RACE continuing education credit per hour of training per participant is provided.
  • Advanced Life Support Sessions are four hours in length.
  • Basic Life Support sessions are two hours in length.
