Oreo’s story is one that highlights the importance of persistence, advanced diagnostics, and collaboration between veterinary specialists.
Oreo first came to see our Internal Medicine team because of a chronic draining wound on her side that simply wouldn’t heal. With a history of having previously undergone surgery after swallowing a pencil, her doctors suspected there might be more to the story.
A CT scan revealed an incredible finding: a second pencil had remained hidden within Oreo’s body, extending between her chest and abdominal cavities and causing ongoing inflammation.
Working together, our Internal Medicine and Surgery teams developed a plan to remove the foreign material and address the damage it had caused. During surgery, the pencil was successfully located and removed, allowing Oreo’s body to finally begin healing.
Following a brief recovery period in the hospital, Oreo returned home to her family. At her follow-up appointments, she continued to heal beautifully and showed no signs of the chronic issues that had brought her to us in the first place.
Today, Oreo is thriving, and her remarkable journey serves as a testament to the value of advanced imaging, collaborative care, and a family dedicated to finding answers.
