One night, Bitty’s family faced every Great Dane owner’s worst nightmare.
Their eight-year-old Great Dane suddenly developed a severely swollen abdomen and began unsuccessfully retching—classic signs of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly known as bloat.
Knowing how serious the condition could be, her family rushed her to Red River Animal Emergency Hospital.
Upon arrival, our team immediately began emergency treatment to relieve pressure in her stomach and confirm the diagnosis. X-rays revealed that Bitty’s stomach had twisted, cutting off blood flow and creating a life-threatening emergency that required immediate surgery.
Despite her age, Bitty’s family chose to move forward with treatment, trusting our team to give her the best chance possible.
The surgery was successful, and Bitty spent several days in the hospital receiving intensive monitoring, pain management, and cardiac support while she recovered from the shock her body had endured.
Today, Bitty’s story is one of perseverance and hope. Years after her emergency surgery, she continues to enjoy life with the family who loves her, proving that sometimes a second chance can become many more wonderful years together.
